ASC Faculty Lecture Series Fall 2008 Program
This semester there are six faculty lectures scheduled. These programs are free and the public is invited. They will be held on Wednesday evenings every two or three weeks beginning on Sep. 3. All lectures start at 7:00 p.m. in Porter Hall room 130 on the ASC campus. Complimentary light refreshments will be offered.

A Visit to the Karakoram: A Roundtable Discussion of the Pakistan and Central Asia of 'Three Cups of Tea'

The book chosen for this summer's Common Reading Experience for incoming ASC freshmen was "Three Cups of Tea", based on Greg Mortenson's dedication to building schools and providing access to education in rural communities in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Come join us for an exploration of the history, lives of women, and culture of the people of the mountainous regions where Greg Mortensen has been changing lives by building schools. Even if you have not read the book, this roundtable may change your life!

Cuba's National Literacy Campaign: A Revolutionary Movement from 1961 to Today

A little-known part of Cuban history is the National Literacy Campaign of 1961. Literate youth, average age 15 to 16, teach illiterate families of rural areas how to read and write while living and working with them. The UN declared the Campaign to be a great success. Dr. Abendroth will share photos and testimonies from his interviews and focus groups with participants in the Campaign. He will also put the Campaign in contexts of history and legacy.
